There is hardly a flute player in the United Kingdom or America who doesn’t owe a great deal to Geoffrey Gilbert for his teaching, his playing, or his influence in one way or another.

—Trevor Wye

The Gilbert Legacy has been an invaluable resource for me for nearly twenty years. I continually discover new insights and inspiring wisdom in Gilbert's teachings, from my days in Dr. Floyd's pedagogy class at the University of Northern Iowa to my own courses at KU. This is the perfect combination of a well-organized, engaging method book that offers numerous firsthand anecdotes, sharing colorful, vital lessons and examples with the reader. This second edition reinforces Gilbert’s transformative teaching through its clarity, generational wisdom, and the inclusion of helpful appendices.

Second Edition

The primary goal in creating this revised and expanded second edition of The Gilbert Legacy, Book 1: Methods, Exercises, and Techniques for the Flutist is to clarify and elaborate on Geoffrey Gilbert’s transformative teaching methods and notable influences. Since the 1980s, I have learned an astonishing amount about Geoffrey Gilbert: the remarkable details of his life, the significance of his contributions to British orchestras and chamber music—especially through his work with The Wigmore Ensemble—all leading to his highly successful career as a virtuosic orchestral principal, influential flute teacher, and gifted conductor.

As my research progressed, supported by documentation from the Gilbert Family Archives, the brief overview of Gilbert’s life and achievements initially presented in chapter 1 of the first edition has grown into a detailed, comprehensive account. This second volume, a complete biography, titled The Gilbert Legacy, Book 2: The Life of a Visionary Flutist, is scheduled for release in 2026.

The Gilbert Legacy, Book 1: Methods, Exercises, and Techniques for the Flutist, a second edition, features a dedication, an epigraph, two forewords—one by Monya Gilbert and the other by Trevor Wye—a preface, and an expanded introduction. Book 1 opens with an introductory section entitled “Prelude,” which offers a summary sketch of Geoffrey Gilbert’s life. Chapter 1 begins with an expansive discussion of “Geoffrey Gilbert’s Approach to Teaching: A Philosophy of Compassion,” illustrated through stories from his successful and influential pupils. The remaining chapters explore Gilbert’s teaching methods and techniques, presenting his own words along with clarifications and explanations, as he conveyed in the first edition. Edits have been made to enhance clarity and understanding, while preserving the original methodology. Additional appendices offer more of his tried-and-true wisdom, providing both reminders and new insights. Highlights include Gilbert’s corrective” (alternate) fingerings, foundational exercises based on Gilbert’s practice ideas for tone and articulation, collected wisdom from flutists and teachers influenced by Gilbert, and a few surprises.

Gilbert’s methods and approach to teaching have proven beneficial for all who worked with him and remain relevant and vital to this day. These pages hold truth and wisdom for all flutists, teachers, and musicians.
