The Gilbert Legacy, Book 1: Methods, Exercises, and Techniques for the Flutist, Second Edition presents updated material on the acclaimed teachings of esteemed British flutist Geoffrey Gilbert. This edition includes two forewords (by Monya Gilbert and Trevor Wye), a preface, an expanded introduction, and a “Prelude,” which offers a brief overview of Gilbert’s life. The opening chapter illustrates Gilbert’s “Philosophy of Compassion,” as described by several of his most influential pupils, including William Bennett, James Galway, Susan Milan, and Peter Lloyd. Gilbert’s methodology is conveyed through his own words, with clarifications, explanations, and examples that explore expression, artistry, and musicianship. Additional appendices contain practical resources such as Gilbert’s “corrective” (alternate) fingerings, and foundational exercises for tone development and articulation, suitable for flutists, teachers, and musicians.
